Acupuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that can relieve pain, improve blood circulation, and stimulate your body’s healing abilities. Acupuncture is an extremely safe and effective, time-honored treatment for many medical problems.

At Lakeside Neurology and Wellness Center, Dr. Schneider is certified in medical acupuncture to address a variety of neurological conditions, including:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Neuropathy
  • Neck and back pain
  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Insomnia
  • Tinnitus

She customizes an acupuncture plan to treat your existing symptoms and boost your general health.

How does acupuncture work?

During an acupuncture treatment, Dr. Schneider places slender needles into different areas of your body. In Chinese medicine, the needles are meant to bring balance to your life force, or qi, and unblock the pathways that energy travels to maintain good health.

From a neurological perspective, the insertion of the needles stimulates your nerves, muscles, and connective tissues to trigger the release of your body’s natural pain killers. The needles also increase blood flow to the area to promote healing from the inside out.

What can I expect during acupuncture?

During your initial visit for acupuncture, Dr. Schneider takes time to review your personal and family medical history, your existing health, and any symptoms you’re experiencing.

If acupuncture is the right treatment option for you, Dr. Schneider begins to insert the needles in certain areas. You may feel a brief tingling sensation as the needle goes in, but the process isn’t painful.

In some cases, Dr. Schneider may heat the needles or stimulate them with low currents of electricity to further stimulate your tissues and nerves. Depending on your needs, the needles may remain in place for up to 30 minutes to achieve the maximum benefit of treatment before Dr. Schneider removes them.

How often do I need acupuncture?

Based on your overall health, Dr. Schneider may recommend a series of treatments over several months. She can discuss what to expect for your therapy during your initial evaluation.

In many cases, acupuncture is effective at relieving pain and other chronic symptoms to reduce your reliance on medication and the need for invasive treatments. Many people experience significant relief of their symptoms after the first treatment, with results continuing to improve with additional visits.

You may also wish to continue with acupuncture to boost your overall health, even when you’re not having symptoms.
